Mark Wilson: Never Let Down

3 Days of Terror: Halloween III: Season of the Witch

October 29, 2008 · 2 Comments

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a misunderstood film. It’s hated by almost everyone. Halloween fans hate it because it has nothing to do with Michael Myers. It was a risky move to make the third installment with Michael Myers. The gamble did not pay off.

Don’t think of this film as a part of the Halloween franchise. It’s a great standalone film with Tom Atkins. What more could you ask for?

What did I learn from Halloween III: Season of the Witch?

  • Tom Atkins looks like he’s about to die from a heart attack
  • despite his appearance of a middle aged slob, he bags a chick that’s 30 years his junior
  • the Silver Shamrock theme song is the catchiest tune ever written
  • John Carpenter’s score is very underappreciated (I consider this one of the best horror scores ever)
  • “Season of the Witch” was the original working title of Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets (1973)
  • The voice of the operator that Challis keeps getting when he tries to call out of Santa Mira is Jamie Lee Curtis

Do I recommend this film?

Absolutely. Most fans hate Halloween III. It is a brilliant film. This film is a standalone film and should be referred to as Season of the Witch. Tom Atkins gives a great performance in one of the cheesiest films of all time.

Couldn’t agree more except that I’m often surprised when I mention my love for the flick how many times people say they dig it. I think there’s a strong cult following for this one. BTW, did you know that the chick Doctor Cop Atkins bangs was the real life inspiration for Mariel Hemingway’s character in MANHATTAN?!

[...] Halloween III: Season of the Witch: This sequel to the uber-successful Halloween films has a plot that is entirely unrelated to the earlier movies. In this horror story, a large Halloween mask making company has plans to kill millions of American children with deadly masks. It starts out with an apparent murder-suicide in a hospital emergency room which leads to an investigation by the on-call doctor. He reveals a plot by an insane toymaker to kill as many people as possible during Halloween through an ancient Celtic ritual involving a stolen boulder from Stonehenge and Halloween masks. I know it’s not strictly a witch, or even a group of witches, but it takes its basic plot structure from witch-like doings, so I’m including it! [...]
