Mark Wilson: Never Let Down

26 Days of Terror: Trick or Treat

Rock n’roll will never die! At least not this Halloween!

Trick or Treat is a rock n’roll nightmare. If you were a heavy metal fan in the ’80s, there’s a good chance that you’ve seen this cult classic. It stars Marc Price (Skippy from Family Ties) with special guest appearances by Gene Simmons & Ozzy Osbourne. The only DVD version of this film is a full-screen barebones disc. If you pick it up, you’ll probably think that Gene Simmons & Ozzy Osbourne are the stars of the film. They have maybe 5 minutes of total screen time combined. Don’t be fooled. This is Skippy’s film.

What did I learn from Trick or Treat?

  • who thought it was a good idea to let Skippy star in a film (he does a good job but come on, he’s not exactly star material)
  • 3 members of the cast of Family Ties starred in rock n’roll films in the ’80s (Michael J. Fox in Light of Day, Marc Price in Trick or Treat and Justine Bateman in Satisfaction)
  • a studio demo LP weighs more than a regular LP
  • playing heavy metal records backwards will summon spirits
  • the film was directed by Charles Martin Smith, the nerd in American Graffiti (pay close attention for his brief cameo as a teacher)
  • Doug Savant liked to play jerks in the ’80s
  • there is a chick in this film that looks exactly like Lori Loughlin
  • rock music will make chicks get all sexed up
  • Sammi Curr was a badass rock who was going to lead rock’s chosen warriors into the apocalypse
  • metalheads are crazy & will probably shoot up your school at some point
  • high school pool parties in the ’80s ruled – there were always topless chicks
  • guitars that shoot lasers rule
  • the town was showing Lunch of the Dead at the local cinema

Do I recommend this film?

No. I can’t recommend this film if you’re simply looking for a good horror film. I would highly recommend this film if you love heavy metal or were a metalhead growing up in the ’80s. Personally, I love this film. I have fond memories of it & think it’s a silly & ridiculous affair. It has a great soundtrack & the acting isn’t too bad. However, the plot is convoluted & crazy. It’s all over the place. The title of the film is misleading. This film really doesn’t have a lot to do with Halloween. It was a marketing ploy to be able to release the film during the Halloween season.  I do, however, highly recommend at least watching the 2 clips I’ve posted below. They are awesome!
