Mark Wilson: Never Let Down

31 Days of Terror: Vamp

First up in my 31 days of terror is Vamp starring Grace Jones and Chris Makepeace. With a plot that was later echoed in From Dusk Till Dawn & Zombie Strippers, the story follows 3 guys who end up in a strip club crawling with the undead.

What did I learn from Vamp?

  • Grace Jones is a stripper who wows the crowd with a bohemian performance art piece (oh and she’s a nasty vampire too)
  • the guy who played Jack Klompus on Seinfeld looked exactly the same in 1986 as he did on Seinfeld
  • when Grace Jones is finally killed at the end of the film (SPOILER) her skeleton gives our hero the finger
  • in typical ’80s fashion, the main character has a bizarre hobby (in this case archery) which later proves to come in handy when killing vampires
  • the guy who played the Donger in Sixteen Candles is a terrible actor
  • Chris Makepeace’s character announces to the strip club patrons that the club is crawling with vampires and is met with the wonderful line, “That doesn’t make them bad people.”
  • Michelle Pfeiffer’s sister, Dedee, is much cuter than Michelle Pfeiffer ever was

Do I recommend this film?

No. If you like cheesy ’80s flicks, you’ll enjoy it but it’s thin on plot and not even remotely frightening. This was an odd film for Grace Jones and for horror fans. The two don’t mix well and her performance is bizarre.

Watch Grace Jones in this 1986 interview about her role in the film:
